Winter is the worst time of year to be unprepared for a plumbing or heating emergency. We have been having some unseasonably lovely weather but keep being informed that the cold is just around the corner! Bearing that in mind, now is the perfect time to make sure that your plumbing is Winter ready, so you don't become one of those people trying to get a plumber to come out to a leak on a Sunday evening!
Here are a few tips to help your plumbing stay fully operational during any cold spells. If you need any advice, or would like to book in a boiler service, please give us a call on 07845 501007.
Outside Taps
Remember to isolate any outside taps, via any internal isolation valve and always leave outside taps in open position to release any pressure.
Boiler Services
It is essential to get the boiler and heating and hot water systems serviced annually. This will help to prevent breakdowns, which in turn can lead to expensive call outs, please give us a ring to either book a service or for a free of charge quote for repairs. Over the summer period is a good time for servicing.
Test heating systems prior to winter setting in
It is good practise to run the heating system for a couple of hours prior to the winter season. Feel all the radiators and make sure its getting hot. This 2 hours prep, will help prevent breakdowns, once it really gets cold. Should you find anything not working correctly, please give us a ring to book an appointment.
Boiler pressures
If the system have low pressure, it is essential to get the boiler and system serviced before using the heating system, please give us a ring and book a service, as this will help to prevent breakdowns and costly repairs.
Drains and Gutters
Make sure that your drains are gutters are not blocked with debris, as when the temperature drops ice can begin to form and this can lead to damage, including potential breaks to the guttering itself. Also, do not pour cooking fats and oils down the sink. This is never wise, but especially in the Winter as when the temperature is lower it is more likely to clog up the pipes and drains, and leave you with a nasty smell and backed up pipes.
