As part of wider initiatives to make the UK carbon neutral by 2050, new gas boiler installations will be phased out. How DoesThat Affect You?
Which? have stated that If you currently have a gas or oil boiler, you won’t need to replace it. However, it does mean that from the mid-2030s you won’t be able to get a traditional gas or oil boiler installed when your current system breaks.
However, the new technology (heat source pumps) is just not where it needs to be yet, and it's very expensive to install. We are talking £15,000-£20,000 to retrofit a current 3-4 bedroom house. There are grants available of around £7000, but that leaves a shortfall of at least £8,000. This new technology also costs more to run every month, and there's no guarantee it will work because the units are weather-dependent.
The best thing you can do at this point is to make your house as efficient as possible. How can you do that?
- Install loft and Cavity wall insulation and double or triple glazed windows. There are free schemes available to help you make your home more energy-efficient.
- Install SMART controls to turn on the heating and hot water, and you can manage this from your phone. Costs start from £250 including installation.
- Get your system cleaned and remove all the dirt. Pushing old dirty water around the radiators is wasted energy, and if the pump that's pushing that water is at least 10 years old it's no longer efficient.
- Get the boiler and system serviced annually and ask for the system to be assessed, so advice can be given on how to make the current system more efficient.
Your current Gas boilers are not going anywhere, just the fuel that it's currently running on will be updated to renewable energy (hydrogen) in the future. It is still not clear when this will change.
